'Flyball season is now well in swing and Moses (Fynder Here Comes Trouble) is delighted. We're currently signed up for 15 competitions. These will take place all over the country from spring until early autumn.
Our latest venture was to Coventry for an indoor competition, indoors are not my favourite as it's incredibly noisy with all those very excited dogs in a confined area but Moses doesn't seem to even notice and it was worth the silly o'clock alarm call as we got 1st, and he managed a few more sub 5 second runs. Looking forward to lots more competitions, hopefully some more restates, oh yes and all those early starts!

On the downside, bad Mummy lost his special ball, it's his reward as he runs back on each race and is (or was) the very best ball in the whole universe and even universes yet to be discovered. They searched and searched but to no avail. Guess Mummy has to make a new one and hope she gets forgiven.

Learning New Things..........

The Irish Water Spaniel, inquisitive, curious and always keen to learn. I'm constantly looking for new activities to do with Moses and about a year ago came across 'Trick Training.' Seemed like fun so we signed ourselves up and really enjoyed level 1, Uber Dude so carried on with level 2, Ninja, level 3, Guru and we've just completed level 4, Grand Master. Each level has about twelve tricks. It's definitely increased our bond. We train weekly but need to practice every day as some of the tricks are difficult. Now we can demonstrate lots of tricks including distance control, identifying words, saying his prayers, rewind, hand signals, hug a toy, wave, skateboarding and more. Moses loves his classes and now we've been invited to join a display team. We've introduced the Irish Water Spaniel to lots more people and continue to have so much fun doing so.

News 16th March 2017 - 25th February 2017 ....... message from Debbie Robinson
' 25th feb - Thanks to Hazel Walker for suggesting such a lovely venue for our Spring mingle - Knoll beach on Studland Bay in Dorset - sand and sea as far as an IWS could see.

A beach mingle at high tide was always going to be a winner for my IWS, Marj, who loves the water. She was whining with excitement as we rolled onto the chainlink ferry across Poole Harbour. The ferry goes from urban Poole to National Trust open space on the other side, ie sandy beaches, heather-dressed dunes, inlets and wind-blown pine trees ....

It wasn’t the sunniest of weather – with lowering clouds - but the rain held off. We did our chatting on the move in the chilly breeze. Although we kept walking, all the dogs that wanted to got their feet wet or just charged around over the sand.

We avoided the wind on our return walk by coming through the dunes. Although the dogs loved exploring the dunes, the soft sand was very difficult for us humans and we kept losing the dogs!

By the time we’d driven round the next bay to The Bankes Arms, we felt we’d earned our lunch.  No need to ask if this pub was dog-friendly, I'd never seen so many dogs in one pub!  All tired out, so as relaxed as their owners!

A handful of us ventured down to the beach below the pub again after imbibing and consuming, where the tide was now out. Dogs chased the waves while we scrambled over the rocks to the next bay and back. Our seats at the pub were barely cold when we returned and settled back down for desserts and coffee! By this time the dogs could hardly keep their eyes open - zzzzzzzz.

Later this year, the autumn mingle will be on Greenham Common in Berkshire. To receive information about future IWS walks, please email Debbie Robinson on debsrobuk@yahoo.com or phone 01243 389005.'

I was deeply sorry to learn that two devotees of the breed had passed away. Flo Williams and Bob Hannant. Both I knew quite well, Flo used to attend training days and always a cheery person. Bob making a sterling journey to support IWSA events. Two people who dearly loved and supported the breed for many years, Flo who had recently re-joined the IWSA after being shown a copy of the new Year Book by a friend, which was so different from what she remembered. She re-kindly her support and rang me quite often recently.

News 8th October 2016 -

Ran Bunty (Fynder Bunty Lawless) in her first ….Walked Up Novice Retriever Test (United Retriever Club) on 21st August.  Huge freshly cut barley fields with stubble. It was run exactly as a simulated Walked Up Novice Retriever Field Trial.
The numbers in this kind of test  are restricted to a maximum of 24 and those running were FT labs and one Goldie. She came 4th and we got past some very well known dogs and handlers. This was quite an achivement for an for an IWS  with lots of people asking about the breed.

The icing on the cake was she ‘eye wiped’ a well known lab in the last round. A simulated rabbit was ‘shot’ way down behind the line, it was a long blind into a hedge and wood. The first dog down was given a rough area, it took a straight line into the hedge, hunted and hunted the hedge and wood but kept pulling left. As next dog down, I was called up, cast her forward on a straight line, pipped stop in the hedge and cast her right followed by hunt whistle. In a flash she had picked!!!

A day to remember!

Pepi.

On 5th October at Windsor open show under judge Pat  Butler Holley, Stirk's Pharises Keep A Secret For Grakar (Sh Ch Malanis Sandor by Glenderry SHCM x Pharises Pasa Dobla) was 1st in Yearling. Walker's Malanis Pirate at Ameysford (Sh Ch Malanis Sandor at Glenderry Sh CM x Malanis Tillymint) was 2nd in Open. Pharises Keep A Secret For Grakar won Best AVNSC.

Today I've been informed unfortunately that Flo Williams from Bangor has died & also Bob Hannant
of the Ferintosh Kennel has passed away.

'Ruth and Bob with their daughters Mary and Jackie were prominent with their Ferintosh IWS particularly during the 70s
Traveling to Crufts by train from Inverness to London as well as family holidays to take in the associations championship show at Kitebrook with a good degree of success.
Bob also enjoyed working his dogs competitively and rough shooting around his beautiful home just out side Connon Bridge on the Black Isle.
Many of us obtained our first IWS from Ruth and Bob that are still devotees of the breed today.
On visiting Ruth she was in good spirits, now in her nineties and contemplating a move from Curlew cottage.'

The IWSA archive is purchasing a copy of the new US Champions Book 2000 - 2015. In an attempt to get postage down, would anyone like a book purchasing co-operatively? A Black and White copy is $35.00 (roughly £27) and a Color copy is $75.00 (roughly £58). I've enquired to how much one is to be posted to UK  & came back as
$34.50 (roughly £26.50), but hopefully the more we bring over the less individually postage would be. If you would like a copy, contact me on hmsmc@hotmail.com .

News from Davis Morris, updating the 'An dara bailiú clan Mulligan ag na farraige' meet up.

'Hello everyone - hoping to see many of you over the weekend, here in Scarborough. After the recent heat wave I might have turned the sunshine volume down just a wee bit too much - weather forecast for the weekend currently says fine but cloudy. Fish and chips are on top form (wasn't sure so have had to make multiple checks...), and the sea is, well, cold.
If anyone fancies getting together before Sunday, contact me on HERE and I'll let you have my mobile phone number so we can co-ordinate things.
Can I suggest for anyone who would like to that we meet up on Saturday night at the Old Scalby Mills pub - see  http://www.oldscalbymills.co.uk near The Sea Life Sanctuary (YO12 6RP). There is plenty of parking which is free after 6pm, and there is a grass verge opposite the pub where we could congregate without the dogs hassling other visitors.
If anyone arrives in Scarbados before your hotel is ready for you give me a call and happy to offer coffees and 'facilities'.

News 21st July 2016 - Hope we have all recovered from the IWS Weekend. Results of the Championship Show, Limited Obedience & Special Awards are now on the website & can be found HERE . IWSA Breed seminar and assessment day  6 December 2015

Held in Lancashire, the day attracted participants from Scotland, South  Wales and Italy as well as those closer to home.  On a dreadful day weatherwise there was only 1 absentee, with many ( Including the speaker) having struggled through floods and long diversions etc.  Angela Williams ( Foulby) gave the presentation on the history of the breed and talked in  depth on the breed standard, using a live model, and the printed Extended Breed Standard put together by Judith Carruthers.  Attendees found this very useful as it includes many photos for comparisons.  After an excellent pie lunch the candidates started the assessment process.  Out of the nine taking the assessment it was very pleasing that 8 passed.  The IWSA is very grateful to the 3  assessors and speaker, the people presenting their dogs for the assessment and the kitchen helpers, for giving up their time to make this a successful day.

More news from Sari Vottonen (Curly-Co) 'This year A Redriot A'Curly-Co V Alpha Nordic (aka Nessa) is Top Spaniel No. 1 in Finland… Happily we are ready to announce that the Finnish Kennel clubs official points to the Dog of the Year competition has been published and our Princess Nessa made True breed History, finishing as # 5 All-Breeds with a very high score of 179 points. This year the competition was extremely close and the top dogs were separated by just a few points. We feel honored to have been able to place this high with such exceptional odds. I want to Thank All the judges (many specials) who have had such faith in a dog of the more rare breeds and thus have had the guts to place Nessa time and time again high up on the podium! Nessa will still compete in a few select shows, before hopefully moving on to maternal duties. She will leave behind her some big boots to fill.... but fortunately we do have our next upcoming Star waiting in the wings, ready to take over Hymiö wink.'

News 25th October 2015 -

Nan Campbell.  (Camlyking)
With great sadness I was informed last evening  23rd October 2015 of the death of Nan Campbell at the age of 82 following a short illness.

Nan, her daughter Pat,  and late husband Sean were well known in IWSA and IWSC circles with their lovely bitch Ch. Crumlin of Lisnabrogue who they showed and worked between them.

I have some lovely treasured memories of Nan of very happy times we spent to-gether, she always  kept in touch. Usually to be seen at the ringside at Crufts on gundog day,  watching the IWS until about  two years ago, she always retained a strong interest in the breed.

The loveliest and kindest of people,  Nan always had a kind word and a smile for everyone and she will be sadly missed.

To Pat, Ian and Family my sincere condolences. I am so glad that our paths crossed. Bless you Nan.

Lois Ferrans.

Back in the UK on 17th & 18th October Mike and “Tatty” attended the K.C. Discover Dogs at The Excell, London Docklands on the 18th October 2015 on behalf of IWSA rescue. He was presented with a cheque for the IWSA Rescue which was presented to him by Pam Hill the Kennel Club’s Rescue Officer. “Tatty” will feature as “Miss January” on the K.C. rescue calendar. The Breed Booth was well represented on both days…….. Below are reports from Hazel Walker & Debbie Robinson.

Discover Dogs

Discover Dogs at the new venue of the Excel London was by all accounts very busy, with many people wanting to know more about IWS. The volunteers answered numerous questions, and their dogs were much admired. Our grateful thanks go to Debbie Robinson for organising the volunteers Thanks also go to Mick & Chris McDonagh for setting up on Friday night and also being there on Saturday with Senachai.  Other volunteers were Sue and Judy Hempstead with Quill, Caz and Malachi; Lesley Everest with Quigley; Patsy Drake with Evie; Caroline Shelford and Joan Robertson ( who also had the arduous task of dismantling the stand and taking everything home) with Kora , Graham Stirk with Tia; and  Debbie & Leo Hewlett with Moses. To them all our thanks for giving up their time and traveling, in some cases a long way, to promote the breed.

We will be looking for volunteers and their dogs for Discover Dogs at Crufts ( 4 days), so if you are interested in promoting the breed and have suitable calm (?) IWS who get on with people and other dogs, I would be interested in hearing from you .

Many thanks to Mick & Chris McDonagh for not only braving London’s Friday evening traffic to set up the Discover Dogs stand for us, but also reappearing to man the stand on the Saturday with their Seanachai (Mweenish My Lucky Day), alongside Patsy Drake and Evie (Antdela Chanel).  The afternoon team took over from Judy + Sue Hempstead and Oscar Tarbox in the morning, who brought along IWS’ Quill (Goldenacre Sea Rider at Cuvana), Malachai (Diddymowg Turquoise Storm at Cuvana) and Anoushka (Nyallup Star Anise) to wow the public.

The Discover Dogs Sunday team opened with Graham Stirk and Tia (Malanis Tia), Leo Hewett with Moses (Fynder Here Comes Trouble) and, in the afternoon, Joan Robertson and Caroline Shelford with Kora (Fynder Nightwave). They were assisted by a visiting IWS, Quigly, and his owner, Lesley Everest,  who stayed on the stand to chat to the public too.

I was pleased to see one othe IWS at the show. Tatty the IWS was on the Kennel Club stand, promoting their 2016 breed rescue calendar, in which she features.

Most of us are used to driving to Earls Court for this event, and weren’t looking forward to this year's journey to Excel, the new venue for Discover Dogs, on the other side of London. However, once we were inside the hall it was ‘business as usual’, or should I say ‘busy-ness’.  Apparently visitor numbers were down on last year, but it certainly didn’t appear that way at our corner stand, which was a hive of activity.

The highlight for me was meeting Dennis McCarthy’s step-son, Paul.  Dennis McCarthy wrote a book called 'Woolly Jumper' about his IWS of the same name.  It's a delightful insight into living with IWS and should be required reading for all first-time IWS owners!  Paul said he was a little boy during Woolly’s lifetime. He remembers her as the only house dog; all Dennis’ other dogs – many afghan hounds - lived outside in kennels.  However when the family began to buy and show little terriers instead of afghans, Woolly’s indoor empire slowly diminished.  I do hope Paul revisits Discover Dogs next year so I can ask him to sign my copy of Woolly Jumper!

We always spend so long at Discover Dogs chatting about life with Irish Water Spaniels, that we come away moaning: ‘not enough time to visit all the trade stands’. This year was no different, but at least we now know the way to Excel for 2016 .

Debbie Robinson

News 12th September 2015 -

Recently I was contacted by Pam Hill from the KC asking if I would send some photos of recently re-homed IWS. for their 2016 Rescue calendar.
I circulated the request to all on my list and those who responded I submitted for the K.C.’s  consideration. For any selected photo the KC offer a small donation to the “breeds” rescue fund.

To my astonishment a few days back I had an email from Pam Hill to say the attached photo was one of those selected so somewhere in 2106 “Tatty” will feature.

'Introducing “Tatty”.

Tatty was looking for a home due to unavoidable circumstances with her original owners.
Mike her new owner, was also looking for some “doggy” company to accompany him on his long walks, and “Tatty” just seemed the perfect match,  although originally Mike had expressed a preference for a dog always previously having had “dogs”. The match was perfect and “Tatty” is enjoying Wales it’s beaches and mountain walks.' (Lois Ferrans)

I submitted also a few words to go alongside the photo but, Pam asked for more so asked Mike to put it in his own words, they are below.

"Having had the joy of three Irish water spaniels before, I contacted the Irish Water Spaniel Association to fill the doggy-shaped gap in my life. I did not have to wait long until Tatty was suggested as my new friend. Tatty’s owners told me what a good-natured, well behaved girl she was but sadly, they needed to re-home her.  She settled in to her new surroundings as soon as her old family had left and enjoys walking in the mountains and swimming in the sea. She is a wonderful companion and I hope we will be friends for years to come." (Mike Smallman)

Jean Margaret Gomm  (29/07/1940 - 03/08/2015)

I first met Jean at Newmarket dog show in 1982 with their first IWS Ernwood Finn. She and Don had been on holiday in Somerset where they had bought a local newspaper where they happened to see an advert for Irish Water Spaniel puppies for sale. Having recently lost a Labrador they decided to go along to have a look at the puppies and meet the breeder Rosemary Western who at the time was Treasurer of the IWSA, and so began and involvement with the breed which has lasted right to the present day. A work colleague of Jean suggested that they should show their newly acquired dog, Flynn, and so they took him along to Newmarket dog show. I owned the sire at that time and we struck up a conversation, which led to a friendship that has lasted ever since. Flynn was shown with moderate success, usually handled by Keith and I can remember the first time he qualified for Crufts, Jean was so proud of that dog.

At that time Jean was working as Customer service Manager at Abbey National Building Society, so when Rosemary Western expressed her wish to retire it seemed perfect timing for Jean to step in and take charge of the IWSA finances, which she accomplished until forced to stand down due to ill health a couple of years ago. Over the many years of service Jean has served the IWSA tirelessly, not only as Treasurer, attending most committee meetings, working numerous shifts in the kitchen at various events, selling raffle tickets, stewarding, making friends and so much more. She had endured several bouts of ill health over the years but always managed to bounce back with a smile every time. Unfortunately earlier this year Jean was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive cancer that did not respond to treatment and she passed away peacefully in hospital in the early hours of Monday morning.

Jean was a strong character, stubborn and determined, with definite opinions and views, she had a great sense of humour and I have fond memories of her smiling face with plenty of laughter wherever she was.  She never owned a big winning dog and circumstances did not allow her to breed a litter but her contribution to the breed and the IWSA in particular is immeasurable and she will be sorely missed by those whose lives she touched. Condolences to her husband Don and their children Joanne and David.

It is with deep regret to hear this morning that Jean Gomm has passed away. Jean has been such a staunch supporter of the IWS and the IWSA over many many years.

Her long hard fight and struggle with cancer over many months has now come to an end, may she rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to Don and her family.

Lois Ferrans

I was very sorry to hear of Jean’s passing.  I will remember all the time she gave in the support of the Association and the breed she so loved.  As Hon Treasurer for many years, she built up a relationship with our home and overseas members who will remember the help she gave them and her advice   when she passed the Year Book on to me was invaluable, thank you Jean.  My thoughts are with Don and the family at this sad time.
