21st APRIL 2008
The IWSA held a judging seminar yesterday, at Tollerton, in the morning Pepi Barrington did a video presentation on the breed
standard, using various dogs who unfortunately are no longer with us, and I must say it was very interesting to see the dogs
from various countries and to see how the breed has changed over the years. Five IWS were present and a panel of assessors
went over the dogs and placed them in order of preference, after lunch which was provided by Leslie Wormleighton and her helpers,
Sharron Peck and Neil Hume the candidates were then invited to go over the dogs, place them in order of preference and then
write a critique, after all candidates had taken part they then had a general discussion with the assessors. The committee
would like to thank Ant Andrews, Judith Carruthers, Christine Smith,Brenda Triffitt and Alan Costley for allowing their dogs
to be accessed.
Also on Sunday the United Spaniel Association Open Show took place the judge for IWS was Don Miller, I understand that he
had an entry of ten dogs with only one absent and his choice for BOB was Sh Ch Zanfi Elder owned by Mrs E Waters, RBOB
was Malanis Cian at Ameysford owned by Mrs H Walker and BP was Holbain Muddy Duck owned by Mrs P Furber , at the time of writing,
I do not know how Sh Ch Zanfi Elder did in the competition for Best in Show as Lisa Walker could not stay to the end of the
show, so if I hear of any more success at the show I will let you know.
Liz Brown has asked me to remind anybody that wishes to be included in the IWSA Judges List to contact her by the end of April
2008.
If you intend to come to the IWSA Water Picnic, can you let Liz Brown or Theresa Shipp know as the landowners would like to
know the number of people who will be attending.
A strange "tail"
I received an e-mail from Eileen Hendry today, with a strange but true story which I think will be of interest to all of you.”A
couple of week ago we took our dogs for a walk beside the River Trent. It’s a beautiful stretch where we can let the
dogs have a good run and swim in the river. We watched as Ghillie was nosing something in the river which looked like a coconut
shell. He picked it up and brought it over, as he got closer I thought it was the empty shell of a tortoise. He presented
it beautifully and on closer inspection I discovered it was a Terrapin! And it was still alive! Not knowing what to do with
it we put it back but we have since checked on the internet and found out that they are causing havoc in the river. They’re
supposed to be difficult to find so maybe Ghillie can get himself a job as a Terrapin locator! They’re nasty things
too and can bite so I’m glad it didn’t bite him as it would have put him of retrieving for a long time!
This has to rate as the oddest thing any of my dogs have retrieved to me!”
